Rectal Prolapse

Prolapse Recti

Rectal prolapse is a relatively uncommon condition seen most frequently in older people, especially women. The condition is caused by the protrusion of the full thickness of the rectum with the rectum turning itself inside-out. This does not cause any pain, but as the condition becomes worse with time, even minimal straining (such as standing up) results in complete prolapse. Patients with prolapse frequently become incontinent with time, if they don't receive treatment.

As a etiology of rectal prolaps, it is said that there is a failure of structures of levator muscle surrounding the rectum to provide adequate suport , thus resulting in an unstable situation.
